Vidalia High completes staff
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Vidalia High School completed its coaching staff for 2011-12 as former Vidalia coach Fred Marsalis will be over the Lady Viking basketball team, while Kale Davis has been named head baseball coach.

"We're very pleased with the coaching staff we have in place," said Vidalia principal Rick Brown. "It was a slower process than what we would have liked, but we want to make sure we have capable people who wanted to do it. I'm tickled at the people we have in place, they are not only good coaches but good people."

Davis served as an assistant coach to Tim Herndon last season when Herndon stepped in after Johnny Lee Hoffpauir resigned to become Vidalia Recreation Director.

Davis is also an assistant coach with the Vidalia football team.

Davis will inherit a team that missed the playoffs for the first time since 1989.

"I did coach the JV last year and have a good rapport with the kids," Davis said. "I enjoyed working with Tim. I felt we worked well together. Being the head coach is a challenge, but one I look forward to. I expect us to have a good year and will not be expecting anything less. I look forward to bringing some stability to the program."

Davis said he will name his assistants in the near future.

Marsalis has been a principal, head football coach, assistant basketball coach and teacher in the Concordia Parish School System for several years before taking a principal job in Natchez.

He will be wearing a new hat as Lady Viking head coach.

"It's good to be back," Marsalis said. "Mr. Brown was looking for someone on staff to coach the girls and I thought it would be fun."

Fred Marsalis Jr. and Tyberia Bell will assist Marsalis.

The Lady Vikings have struggled to win two games the past several years.

"I met with the team and we had 20 girls," Marsalis said. "There's no pressure. We're going to stress fundamentals and get more interest in the program."

Marsalis was the first African-American coach at Ferriday High when he took over as head coach of the football team and coached from 1974 to 1977.

He then moved to Vidalia High and was an assistant coach with Ken Simmons when the Viking boys basketball team won its first state championship in 1979.

Marsalis is also on the Riverland Medical Center Board of Directors.
