Irrigated crop yields higher Not surprisingly, irrigated crops during this hot, dry summer are producing much greater yields than crops totally dependent on rainfall for moisture, County Agent Nan Huff said this week.
Huff said the corn harvest is 95 percent complete with irrigated fields averaging yields of 200 bushels or better per acre.
"Non-irrigated crops are averaging about 50 bushels to 140 bushels per acre depending on the land and whether the field had seepage from the river," Huff said.
Soybean yields are averaging 15 to 80 bushels per acre with irrigated soybeans doing the best, Huff said. She said the soybean harvest is more than 50 percent complete.
She said the milo harvest is about 95 percent complete with yields averaging about 95 bushels per acre.
"We're hearing different ranges of yields, but that's the average," Huff said. "Nobody irrigates milo acreage."
About 75 percent of rice fields have been drained in preparation for harvest, Huff said. "So far yields are about 160 to 200 bushels an acre, a little better than last year."
About half of the cotton acreage has been defoliated for harvest. Fields are averaging about 800 pounds per acre. For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
