Residents are urged to line the streets of Vidalia and Ferriday and along Hwy. 84 from Vidalia to Jonesville on Thursday afternoon as the Vidalia National Guard unit departs for deployment to Afghanistan.

The local Guard unit is scheduled to leave the armory at Vidalia from around 3 to 3:15 p.m. Thursday. The soldiers will board a bus and travel down D.A. Biglane to Hwy. 131 to the Mississippi River Bridge in Vidalia. From there, the convoy will travel through Vidalia and Ferriday in route to Camp Beauregard.

"We urged the public to turn out with their flags and see them off," said Vernon Stevens of the Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office, which hosted a reception for the departing troops and their families Tuesday night at the Community Center on Hwy. 15. Members of the Vidalia unit as well as battalion and company representatives were in attendance. Each soldier was provided a gift bag.
