Two inducted into Delta Music Hall of Fame There was a little bit of everything for everybody at the 10th Annual Delta Music Museum Festival Saturday in Ferriday.
Besides honorees The Hemphills and James Burton, Donna Douglas, better known as Elly May on the Beverly Hillbillies, and Ferriday native Jake Schiele made appearances.
"It was a great festival and great entertainment," said Ferriday Mayor Glen McGlothin. "We inducted two greats in their field. And having Donna Douglas here just put an exclamation point on everything."
The 78-year-old Douglas was supporting the Hemphills and took the stage to tell everyone ""Set a spell — take your shoes off. Y'all come back now, y' hear?," followed by her trademark shrill whistle.
Burton had an engagement in Green Bay, Wis., Monday, so was unable to perform, but he did accept his award. Jake Schiele, son of Ed Schiele, an original past member of Easy Eddie and the Party Rockers, played tribute to Burton on his guitar.
Schiele won a James Burton guitar contest against about 100 other people.
"I played with Mickey Gilley and Jerry Lee (Lewis) and met Jimmy Swaggart," Burton said. "This is a great honor. I promise I will be back and perform with my good friend Al Harris."
Harris, a native of Franklin Parish, was inducted in 2004. He worked with Burton, Johnny Horton and the Ricky Nelson Band. For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
