Story Archives: Street overlay set in Vidalia

Street overlay set in Vidalia

W.E. Blain & Sons presented the low bid for overlay work on eight streets in Vidalia as well as expanding the parking lot on the riverfront toward Promise Hospital.

The project will include removing present asphalt and putting down new asphalt on the eight streets.

Blain entered a bid of $739,705. D&J Construction of West Monroe, only other bidder, offered a price of $1,130,850.

Mayor Hyram Copeland said the town is paying for the work through additional sales tax accumulated over the years.

"We have $2.7 million in that road tax fund," Copeland said.

The roads being overlaid are Gillespie, South Spruce, Murray Drive to Concordia Avenue, Lee Avenue, Cross Street, Beech St., Carolina Street and Jim's Drive.

The expanded parking lot will add 85 parking spaces.

"That is sorely needed," Copeland said. "When we have a large convention, parking is an issue. We hope to have this project completed by the end of the fall."

Copeland said re-striping will be done on Concordia Avenue and some other streets and that some street signs will be replaced.
