Cathedral gets big road win

Cathedral High took a positive step in defending its region title, defeating Resurrection 45-21 Saturday in Pascagoula.

"We got the long trip out of the way early and we're happy with the win," said Green Wave coach Ron Rushing. "It was a long day."

Cathedral totaled 507 yards of offense.

The Eagles got on the board first with a 51-yard run by Devonne Stephenson to take a 7-0 lead.

Cathedral answered with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Caleb Upton to Tyler Flemming to tie the gam and a 16-yard TD pass from Upton to Daniel Huffines.

Resurrection tied the game with a 65-yard run by Jared Shannon.

The Green Wave got an 11-yard touchdown run by Khalil Brice and a fumble recovery in the end zone by Josh Callaway to increase their lead.

Resurrection got its final touchdown of the game in the second quarter on a 72-yard run by Devon Stephenson.

"Irving Spikes Jr., is a horse at 6-2, 220, but Stevenson is the better back," Rushing said. "He's a lot faster."

J.D. Ealey answered Stephenson's score with a 9-yard run of his own to make the halftime score 34-21 Green Wave.

Cathedral scored twice in the third quarter. Brice caught a 9-yard pass from Upton, and Lee Fairbanks added a 35-yard field goal to give the Green Wave a 24-point lead, which they would hold until the final whistle.

Ealey had 186 yards on 24 carries and one touchdown. Upton finished his night 17-27 passing with three touchdowns.

Cathedral hosts another region opponent in Stringer Friday.

"They have a right tackle who is 6-2, 330 and another lineman who is 6-5, 270," Rushing said. "They run right behind those two guys."
