Harris Brown's brief foray into the world of Louisiana politics as a candidate should serve as lesson to anyone who harbors any thoughts of seeking public office on any level.

What is the lesson, you may ask?

Do your homework before you jump head first into any campaign, especially if you're going to take on an incumbent member of the state Senate who has spent the better part of his adult life working in the public arena.

A 46-year-old Republican from an old-line north Monroe family, Brown was considered in some corners as a serious threat to Kostelka's grip on the Senate District 35 seat. He's young, has a pretty wife and he's done very well for himself financially in the oil and gas business. Besides, his remarks in declaring his candidacy for the District 35 race touched on all of the topics that poll well among voters in northeastern Louisiana – a businessman, not a career politician, opposed to any new taxes, etc.
