Story Archives: Vidalia, Police Jury tallying flood costs

Vidalia, Police Jury tallying flood costs

The Concordia Parish Police Jury and Vidalia are continuing to assess their flood recovery costs and uncertain to date what total costs will be.

"We're working on it," said Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland.

Police Jury President Melvin Ferrington says he hopes to meet with FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) and state officials soon to discuss recovery funding for four parish roads damaged by flood waters.

"We're trying to set up a meeting to go over with FEMA and the state what we need in funding for flood-damaged roads and for the expenses we incurred when moving equipment out of the parish when the river was rising," Ferrington said.

The Mississippi River reached record levels in May and flooded four parish roads outside the mainline levee -- Deer Park, South Prong, Rokofee and Old River.

The Vidalia Riverfront was also flooded although several businesses and the convention center were protected from flood waters by temporary levees.

"We feel very confident we will be compensated for our recovery work," Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland said. He said preparation work totaled about $1.5 million but it is uncertain what recovery costs will reach.
