Story Archives: Vidalia Municipal Complex completion date January 2012

Vidalia Municipal Complex completion date January 2012

Work on the Vidalia Municipal Complex should be completed by mid-January 2012, Mayor Hyram Copeland said Monday as he inspected construction progress at the site.

The mayor walked into each bare room of the complex being built off of U.S. 84 and described what each room would be.

"It's bigger than what we've currently got, a lot more convenient and there's room for expansion," Copeland said.

The new city hall building is closest to the highway and is a 10,000-square feet structure. The new Vidalia Police Department building will be 8,000 square feet and the new Vidalia Fire Department building will be 12,000 square feet.

A drive-through for the new city hall will face the highway. The new city hall building will feature a larger board meeting room and utility bill payment room.

There will also be another room for smaller meetings.

"Every room is easily accessible," Copeland said.

And there is also much more room for parking.

"One of the few gripes we have gotten is some people saying it is too far out," Copeland said.

Driving from the facility to the foot of the Mississippi River Bridge takes six minutes, including stops at two red lights.

"A lot of people come out this way shopping anyway," Copeland said.

The new police department building will feature the chief's office near the front with a large lobby for visitors.

Twelve tennis courts will be located on the west side of the complex with the recreation center spanning the east side.

"All of this will justify bringing in another hotel," Copeland said.

Copeland said the city will apply for a $500,000 land, water and resources grant each year which has to be matched with $250,000 in-kind work.
