Black & Blue Civil War program on tap The 4th Annual Black & Blue Civil War Sesquicentennial is slated for Saturday, October 1, at Jefferson College in Washington, Miss.
The event -- which will feature the living history of "freedom seeking slaves" -- will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Organizer of the program is Ser Seshsh Ab Heter-CM Boxley.
The program will include a reenactment/play based in part on what is known as the Second Creek slave uprising in Adams County which may have been connected to an uprising in Jefferson County in 1861. The program will center on plans by local slaves to emancipate themselves and become freedom fighters with the Union army. That plan reportedly also included killing white slave owners and overseers.
Though the uprising never occurred, dozens of slaves were executed by hanging in the aftermath of the discovery of the alleged plot.
Twenty-one actors will betray the roles of several characters.
Boxley said the play "has five acts, but a lot of different sets. Act 1 is about the planned uprising in Natchez in April of 1861, Act 2 is about the planned uprising in Jefferson County in May of 1861, Act 3 is about the Second Creek planned uprising in the summer of 1861, Act 4 is about the vigilance committee's actions against enslaved folks in the late fall of 1861, just about this time of the year," Boxley said. He said Act 5 "will be fast forwarding to two years later in the Freedom Summer of 1863."
A caravan will assemble at 6:30 a.m. Saturday at the Forks of the Road in Natchez, where slaves were once sold, and then travel to Jefferson College for the program.
Guest speaker at 11 a.m. will be Dr. Ronald F. Davis, retired history professor from California State University at Northridge.
The living history drama will begin at 1 p.m.For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
