Cotton yields higher than expected

Concordia's cotton harvest is halfway complete and yields are greater than anticipated, according to County Agent Nan Huff.

"It's better than we were thinking," she said, due partly to drought conditions. "A lot of the picked cotton has yet to be ginned."

She said "we're seeing yields of betwen 850 to 1200 pounds per acre."

USDA reported this month that the state's cotton production is expected to reach 550,000 bales, up 26 percent from last year. Yields are expected to average 926 pounds per acre, 84 pounds higher than last year.
