New letter grade system implemented for schools A newly established letter grade system for Louisiana public schools has been implemented and parents need to understand how the new system works, according to Dr. Paul Nelson, Director of Academic Affairs for the School Board.
He said the school grades will be released soon, possibly as early as this week.
The Legislature enacted the new letter grade policy in 2010. According to the Louisiana Department of Education (LDE), the purpose of the legislation is "give parents and others a clearer measure of how a school is performing."
According to LDE, in December 2010 the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) "set standards for schools to earn letter grades based on their annual School Performance Scores (SPS). Under the new system, a top-performing school with an SPS of 120 or above will earn an 'A.' Schools that have an SPS below 65 for the 2010-2011 school year will receive an 'F.'"
Nelson said a number of Concordia Parish schools are not currently performing "at the levels that we would like them to." He says five schools will be given a grade of "D" under the new system, three will receive a grade of "C," and two with get a grade of "B."
"Interestingly enough is the fact that five of these schools will have a School Performance Score (SPS) higher than the state average with four of them having a SPS of over 100," Nelson said. "Just last year the Louisiana Department of Education was applauding these schools."For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
