Story Archives: Schools get DPS score of 'C'

Schools get DPS score of 'C'

Concordia Parish's District Performance Score(DPS) gained 3.8 points and moved up from 87.6 to 91.4, according to Dr. Paul Nelson, Director of Academic Affairs for the Concordia Parish School Board.

He said the DPS of 91.4 means that the district received a letter grade of "C."

While pleased that parish improved its DPS score, Nelson said "no one is satisfied with the 'C' and school personnel throughout the parish are working towards improving their performance. Eight of our 10 schools showed growth which we are very happy with, but we need to continue to work hard and show additional growth."

Nelson said parish schools ranked 12th in the state -- out of 70 school districts -- in the percentage of schools showing growth and the district ranked 18th in the percentage of overall growth.

"We are working hard throughout the parish to put things in place to help our schools improve and our students achieve," he said. "We are not happy with the way the letter grade system was created and the fact that the BESE (Board of Elementary & Secondary Education) Board went against the statewide committee's recommendation, but it is something we will have to work with."

Nelson said the Concordia Education Center is no longer "Academically Unacceptable" as it does not "have enough students to be considered a school for state accountability reasons."

Parish scores were as follows: Ferriday High, 74.0, D; Ferriday Junior High, 71.2, D; Ferriday Lower, 69.9, D; Ferriday Upper, 65.8, D; Monterey, 118.2, B-; Ridgecrest, 81.8, D; Vidalia High, VHS, 102.9, C; Vidalia Junior High, 100.1, C-; Vidalia Lower, 109.9, B+; and Vidalia Upper, 99.9, C+.
