Ferriday eyes bill for water plant work
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Recent repairs to Ferriday's old water plant amounted to more than $223,000, Mayor Glen McGlothin told the Ferriday Town Council Monday night.

The mayor showed the Council the bill from JCP Management of Harrisonburg. He said several government agencies -- the Department of Health & Hospitals, the Department of Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency -- all agreed the bill had to be paid, although McGlothin said the money could have been used elsewhere.

McGlothin said he has requested assistance from U.S. Sens. Mary Landrieu and David Vitter, as well as Congressmen Rodney Alexander and John Fleming for assistance.

"I have been doing a lot of politicking," McGlothin said. "This is money we need for roads, recreation, buildings."

Alderman Gloria Lloyd said she doesn't understand why the town has to pay money on something it will not use.

"It's a waste of money," Lloyd said.

"I agree, but that's the mandate," McGlothin said.

"They are putting us in a bind," Lloyd said. "We're spending money we should not have to spend."

"It all goes back to you cannot make good water out of Old River," McGlothin said. "Every time the river drops or rises or the temperature changes the chemicals have to be treated."
