Voters say no to real estate taxes; assessors elected Concordia voters joined the electorate throughout Louisiana in supporting Amendment No. 1 on Saturday's ballot.
Only eight percent of the parish's registered voters cast ballots, according to Clerk of Court Clyde Ray Webber.
Passage of the amendment prohibits the levy of new taxes or fees upon the sale or transfer of immovable property after November 30, 2011. It also prohibits the Legislature from passing statutes creating new real estate transfer taxes.
Parish voters supported the measure with 88.73 percent of the vote. A total of 945 voters voted in support of the amendment, while 120 voted against. The measure passed in 20 of the parish's 21 precincts and in early voting.
Statewide, the amendment passed with 80 percent of the vote with 476,938 voting in support and 113,326 voting again.
In Catahoula, Matt Taylor defeated Sam Wilkerson for the assessor's post with 54.46 percent of the vote. Taylor received 1,800 votes parishwide, to 1,505 for Wilkerson.
In the Tensas Parish assessor's race, Donna Randolph Ratcliff defeated Hattie Chambers Ward by 19 votes. Ratcliff garnered 50.44% of the vote to Ward's 49.56% to win 1080 to 1061.
