Former Vidalia Police Chief Billy Hammers died Nov. 23 at Natchez Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness. He was 60.

"I had the privilege of working with Billy for 10 years," said Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland. "I really enjoyed working with him. He was a very efficient police chief. Billy never met a stranger.
