No other way to twist it They've played before.
They are the two best teams.
LSU beat them on their home field.
They are the two best teams.
You should not have two teams from the same conference playing for the national championship.
They are the two best teams.
A team that does not win its conference should not play for a national championship.
They are the two best teams.
OK, so maybe there is only one good reason why LSU should play Alabama for the national championship. But it's a good reason.
But I agree with all the other reasons. I will even go so far as to say that if LSU loses to Georgia they should not play for the national championship, although that apparently is not going to stop the Tigers from making it to New Orleans.
Of course, a lot of people think the first meeting between LSU and Alabama was so boring that they don't want to see it again. I'm still trying to figure that one out.
Sure, they were both conservative, but when your defenses are that good, you don't want to make a mistake and fall behind by more than one touchdown or it could be turn out the lights.
I think you should have the top two teams in the nation playing each other and that's undoubtedly LSU and Alabama.
I also think it is unjust for LSU to have to beat Alabama twice to win a national championship.
If Alabama wins, then you have Alabama beating LSU once and LSU beating Alabama.
Now if the Crimson Tide blows out the Tigers, I don't think a lot of people would have trouble arguing with that.
But an Alabama win by a touchdown or less, then you have a lot of people feeling as if they were watching a great movie but the electricity went out before the final part.
"Wait, that's it?" What was that? They have to play again.
Of course, if we had a playoff system you would not have to worry about it to begin with.
It seems the wild card is Oklahoma State. If the Cowboys beat Oklahoma some feel they may slip past Alabama.
I have a hard time with that one, but there are some voters so against a rematch that they would vote OSU up just to prevent that from happening.
But I don't think any other team in the nation has any right to argue.
Oklahoma, you lost to Texas Tech and then to Baylor. The Sooners once again received votes for preseason No. 1 but fell flat on their faces in games they should not have lost.
Oklahoma State laid an egg against Iowa State. Yes, Iowa State. Champions don't lose to the Cyclones.
Oregon, which fell to LSU 40-27 in the season-opener, was embarrassed by Southern Cal 38-35.
Speaking of embarrassing, Stanford lost to Oregon 53-30. LSU and Alabama went a month without giving up that many points.
So scream if you want, but your inability to play like a champion all year long is why a re-match is what we are looking at next month.
It's going to be a long month of looking at the highlights of that first meeting.
Especially for those teams looking in from the outside.
But get over it. |
