Grand Village program to feature Prospect Hill Plantation The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians will present an illustrated talk by Jessica Crawford entitled "Captain Isaac Ross's Prospect Hill Plantation – Then and Now" in the museum auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 8.
Admission is free and seating is limited.
Jessica Crawford is the Southeast Regional Director for the Archaeological Conservancy. From her office in Marks, Mississippi, she manages Conservancy properties in seven southeastern states and is responsible for acquiring new archaeological properties for preservation.
Prospect Hill plantation in Jefferson County, Miss., is a recent acquisition of the Archaeological Conservancy. Captain Isaac Ross, who established Prospect Hill in the early 1800s, was active in the Mississippi Colonization Society, a branch of the American Colonization Society, which founded a colony for freed slaves in what is now the African country of Liberia. The plantation was also the scene of a slave uprising that led to the burning of the original house and the lynching of several slaves. Crawford will discuss the history of the plantation and the Conservancy's plans for studying and preserving the property.
