Police Jury facing rising costs for prisoner care The Concordia Parish Police Jury, facing rising costs for the care of prisoners, is searching for ways to cut expenses as its prepares to adopt its 2012 budget next week.
Jurors met in executive session Monday night with representatives of Riverland Medical Center (RMC) to discuss health care for prisoners.
Jury President Melvin Ferrington said jurors also discussed specific invoices for prisoner care, including one amounting to $9,334 for one prisoner's one-time visit to the RMC emergency room.
An invoice from another facility -- Alexandria Cardiology Clinic in Alexandria -- totaled $1,100 for another prisoner whose ambulance ride from Huey P. Long Medical Center to Rapides Regional cost $441.58.
"The cost of medical care for prisoners is really digging into our general fund," Ferrington said.
Ferrington said the Jury has spent $125,241.25 in 2011 in prisoner care and housing. He said that total includes hospital visits, $28,481.69; prescription drugs, $3,561.09; housing, $88,264.73; and other medical expenses, $4,933.74.For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
