Feds reject Vidalia port funding Mayor Hyram Copeland said other funding sources for construction of the Vidalia port will be sought following news this week that an $11 million federal grant application has been rejected.
"We're competing with urban areas like New Orleans, but we're confident that we will get the funding needed," Copeland said. "We realize that is going to be an ongoing process and we are certain our port will be built."
Vidalia competed with cities across the country for a federal grant through the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Program, which was created by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in 2009 to spur national competition for transportation projects that promise significant economic and environmental benefits.
Concordia Economic & Industrial Development District Executive Director Heather Malone said the city is developing a master plan for the port.
"That puts us in the position to apply for state priority funds," she said. "We're talking to experts in that program and they believe we are eligible for the $11 million needed for the port."
Malone said the city received a $1.25 million federal grant from the Economic Development Administration to built the port access road from Hwy. 131 to the base of the Mississippi River levee.
Additionally, Malone said the city received $1.46 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation to complete the access road from the levee to the working pad site at the port.
She said the $11 million sought through the TIGER Program was to be used for construction of the working pad and ramp and for excavation work. For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
