Nguyen, Chandler named to team

Thao Nguyen of Vidalia High and Charles Chandler of Ferriday High have been named to the Louisiana High School Athletic Association All Academic Football Team.

Nguyen was named to the Class 3A team, while Chandler was named to the Class 2A team.

Nguyen sported a 3.5556 grade point average at Vidalia.

"I am very excited about making the team," he said. "Academics have always been important to me. My parents (Hong and Diep Nguyen) have always pushed me to have a good education. They know that's an important part of being successful in life."

Nguyen and his family moved from New Orleans to Ridgecrest when he was five years old and moved to Vidalia when he turned 11.

Nguyen said his favorite subject is math.

"I've always been good in math and it's always come natural to me."

Nguyen said he plans on attending Louisiana Tech and majoring in Kinesiology.

"I have one day to be an athletic or personal trainer," he said.

Nguyen played running back for the Vikings.

"Playing football taught me a lot of things," he said. "I learned to keep pushing and never give up. I learned how to deal with adversity. It was a privilege playing for Vidalia High and playing for Coach (Gary Paul) Parnham."

As for memorable games or plays, Nguyen admitted the play he remembers most is one most would rather forget.

"We were playing Marksville and I was on the punt team and I ran down towards the punt returner and just got absolutely blindsided," he said. "It's something I will never forget."

Chandler, the son of Charles Sr. and Tarvia Chandler, posted a 3.5952 GPA at Ferriday.

"I am honored and thrilled to make the team," Chandler said. "Academics has always been important to me. If you can't make it in sports, you can have academics to fall back on in life."

Chandler, who played on the offensive and defensive line at Ferriday, said his favorite subject is also math.

"My dad is a math teacher," he said.

Chandler, who also plays basketball, moved with his family from Memphis to Ferriday before he entered the sixth grade.

"I'm really going to miss playing football at Ferriday," he said. "I plan on attending Northwestern and majoring in physical therapy. I know there is more to life than football and sports. You have to work hard to get what you want."
