Auditors seize Ridgecrest computer, records Auditors with the Legislative Auditor's Office seized the Town of Ridgecrest's main computer and business records last week after initiating an investigation into the town's finances.
Mayor Dwayne Sikes said two auditors reviewed records at town hall on Tuesday and Wednesday (Dec. 20-21) and were joined by a third auditor on Thursday (Dec. 22).
"They took the main computer that stored all of the town's business records," Sikes said. "We were allowed to transfer the records of that computer onto other computers before the main computer was taken."
He said auditors also scrutinized bills and cash payments relating to the town's water system.
"They left Thursday and didn't indicate when they would be coming back," Sikes said.
At a special meeting of the Ridgecrest Town Council last month, Sikes revealed that 10 of the town's 12 certificates of deposit (CDs) amounting to $52,072.52 were closed out in 2010 without the knowledge or authorization of the town council.
A financial report from the town's CPA -- Silas Simmons of Natchez -- indicated that $25,399 of town money can not be accounted for.
In early November, then Mayor Kevin Graham resigned from office, while Town Clerk Dana DeLaughter has since been placed on administrative leave without pay. Sikes said Graham did not give a reason for his resignation.
Sikes was appointed by the Council as mayor after Graham stepped down. For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
