Story Archives: Monterey insurance rates lowered

Monterey insurance rates lowered
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Monterey Fire Protection District No. 1 lowered it class rating from a 7 to a 5, which should save residents about 30 percent on their homeowners insurance, according to Monterey Fire Chief Jim Graves.

"We added some new equipment," he said, "and we met the criteria for the rating."

Graves said in order to lower the classification, the department had to pass intense testing.

"We had to show we were faster shuttling and carrying water than if we were hooking it up to a fire hydrant," Graves said.

Graves said Monterey will have the Class 5 rating for a year.

"They will come back here next February and if we still have the same equipment, which we will, then we will keep that rating for five more years," he said.
