Disaster funding for levees provided Fifth District Levee Board President Reynold Minsky said the district could make good use of disaster funding for levee work if funds are made available locally.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that disaster funding is now available after President Obama signed the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act in late December.
The Corps said the Mississippi Valley Division will receive approximately $802 million of the $1.7 billion appropriated. The Corps also reported that the Mississippi River and Tributaries System prevented more than $120 billion in damages during the Great Flood of 2011, the largest recorded flood in the river's history.
Kavanaugh Breazeale of the Corps' Vicksburg District Public Affairs and Communications Office, said the disaster monies will "distributed evenly to cover hot spots" in the Mississippi River Valley from Minneapolis-St. Paul to New Orleans.
"That includes our region at Vicksburg," he said. "Where ever there is the greatest danger and greatest need is where the money will go. Work is to begin immediately to identify the most critical areas."
Minsky said the Fifth District could use some of those dollars for relief wells at nine locations in the district. He said four are needed in East Carroll Parish, four in Tensas and one on the Concordia-Tensas line.
"We also have concerns about whether we will have any major slides," Minsky said. "We had a lot of cracks on the levee in some areas due to the drought that was then followed by the flood. That's something we're just going to have to watch."For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
