In its first meeting of the new year Monday night, the Concordia Parish Police Jury in one motion re-elected Melvin Ferrington as president and Red Tiffee as vice-president.

Eight jurors were in support, while juror Willie Dunbar cast the lone vote against because he said he opposed Tiffee's re-election.

Ferrington requested that Jury committees be more active during the year, and particularly cited the need to update the parish's ordinances.

"It seems as if we have better meetings when our committees are involved in the daily activities of the Jury," he said.

In other action, the jurors appointed Kendrell Watkins to filled he unexpired term of Justin Conner, who resigned as District 1 Justice of the Peace.

An election to fill the remainder of Conner's term will be held in November. Justices of the peace are elected to six-year terms.

Clerk of Court Clyde Ray Webber said voters in Ridgecrest will also go to the polls in November to elect a mayor and alderman.
