Story Archives: Saints carrying torch now

Saints carrying torch now
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
So there is not much to follow up on concerning LSU's BCS contest against Alabama Monday night. Recruiting day is a couple of weeks off followed by spring football.

What better time to talk about the New Orleans Saints. And what better way to brighten up a somber mood.

The Saints are unbeatable in the Superdome (OK, enough with that Mercedes-Benz stuff although I know it pays the bills).

But there will be no more games in the Superdome this season (probably a good thing, I don't know how much more those walls can take).

If the Saints are going to make it to the Super Bowl, they have to go through San Francisco and probably Green Bay. I do not believe the Giants are mentally tough enough to win at Lambeau.

That's two tough tasks, although winning in San Francisco is very doable. The Saints defeated the 49ers 24-3 in their first preseason game in 'Frisco.

Of course, the 49ers were just getting acclimated to new coach Jim Harbaugh.

The Saints had six first-half sacks in that contest.

The 49ers defeated St. Louis 34-27 in their final regular season game to clinch home field against the Saints, who have to be kicking themselves even harder right now for losing to the Rams in St. Louis.

The Rams hit some big pass plays against the 49ers.

Of course, the 49ers are looking at it from a different perspective.

They believe they can do a better job of tackling Pierre Thomas., who broke at least 10 tackles to compile 66 yards on eight carries and he caught six passes for another 55 yards. The 49ers are, possibly, the best tackling team in football.

The Lions had no running attack in this game (10 rushes, 32 yards) against the Saints. The 49ers own the eighth-best running game in the league.

Lions middle linebacker Stephen Tulloch had a horrible game. He was constantly manipulated by Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

Tulloch was also late covering the middle in the Lions two-deep defense.

That won't happen with 49ers linebackers Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman, who have more speed and awareness than Tulloch.

The Lions forgot to cover tight end Jimmy Graham who scored on a 3-yard touchdown. They did the say thing with Robert Meacham on a 56-yard score.

The 49ers haven't committed glaring coverage mistakes this year in their secondary.

Detroit got little pressure on Drew Brees. The 49ers should get more with their front four, which has accounted for 32 of the team's 44 sacks.

The 49ers made 23 interceptions during the season. The Lions dropped three picks in this game.

Personally, it comes down to Saints' offensive line protection for Drew Brees and getting pressure on Alex Smith. I truly believe it would be another blowout in the Dome, but the Saints will be in for a tougher challenge by the bay.

But Brees and company will come through in the end.

They are our last hope for a title.
