Holland, 92, bags buck
Warren Jay Holland of Monterey has been hunting for 85 years. And he's not about to stop.
"I don't know why but a lot of people don't like me hunting now," said the 92-year-old Holland. "I don't know why they worry about me."
Holland, who resides at The Columns Community Care Center in Jonesville with his wife, Anna, showed he is more than capable earlier this month, adding to his collection with a 6-point, 190-pound buck he harvested on January 9 in Monterey while hunting with his nephew and his son.
"I was in a 16-foot tall deer stand near Lismore," Holland said. "I got there early, before daylight and I was sitting there about 7:15 when the deer walked out in this wheat patch. He stopped and I shot him. I got out of the stand and pulled him about a quarter-mile to my truck and my nephew and his son helped me load him out and skin him."
Holland, who also killed a deer last year, began hunting when he was seven years old.
"I just enjoy seeing them," he said. "I would rather sit in the deer stand and watch them. I don't care if I kill one or not."
And as far as being able to hunt at the age of 92?
The good Lord has been good to me," he said. "I'll still be hunting next year if I am able to get around. I can get up in a stand pretty good, although it''s not as easy as it used to be. But I've got a safety belt and a good chair to sit in as well as a heater in case it gets cold."
Holland said the biggest deer he ever killed was a 14-point buck back around 1942.
"It was two years after we married," Holland said. "I was riding a horse across Cocodrie Bayou in some flat woods. I heard some dogs running and had my .22 rifle. I saw the deer coming and when he stopped across an open flat about 100 yards from me I shot one time. I had to load him up on my horse, that was a tough job."
Holland has been staying with his wife at The Columns for about a year.
"Right now I've been under the weather, so it may be a while before I get back out there," he said. "But I certainly am planning on it." |
