ULM tills Ag program soil ULM President Nick Bruno said his focus over the past year has not only been to promote the strengths of the university, but to also meet the needs of the region. For this region, that need is a crop of students knowledgeable about the agriculture industry.
"Agriculture is one of the largest economic contributors to our area," Bruno said. "Students now need to be more analytical and they need to be able to speak wisely as it relates to commodity trading, crop information and technology that is now being used on our farms."
To provide those students with the skills required for the business, the agriculture program is now under the College of Business – a decision Bruno said came from focus groups with agricultural interests and agri-businesses that addressed the changing needs in agriculture and the training students would need to meet those demands.
Bruno said the new direction of the program would include a curriculum that more closely matches what the industry is expecting of graduates, with a focus toward food safety.
"There is not a lot of training in that area, but there is a lot of food production and food storage in this area, so it's a perfect fit for us," he said. "We're currently pursuing a number of avenues that will provide for startup cost for laboratories to teach and research in that field."For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
