Monterey boys upset Oak Hill
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Monterey High's Hayden Cassels hit a free throw with no time remaining on the clock to give the Wolves a 76-75 win over Oak Hill Friday.

The Wolves led by 10 with two-and-a-half minutes remaining, but Oak Hill fought back and tied the game at 75-75 and had the ball with 15 seconds remaining.

Monterey forced a turnover and put up a shot with seconds remaining that was no good, but Cassels grabbed the rebound and was fouled just before the horn sounded.

"That's one of those games you have to have if you are going to compete for the district title," said Monterey coach Eric Richard. "We played one of our best games of the year, especially offensively. The only downfall was losing the lead late."

The loss was the first district loss for Oak Hill, while Monterey improved to 2-2 in district.

Monterey is ranked No. 31 in Class B power ratings by kenramsey.com. Oak Hill is No. 14. The top 32 teams make the playoffs.

Dillon Smith led the Wolves with 34 points, while Cassel added 20.

"This game should be a big boost for us the rest of the year," Richard said.

The Lady Wolves fell to Oak Hill 59-56, their first loss in district after winning their first three district games.

The Lady Wolves are ranked No. 22 in the Class B power ratings, while Oak Hill is No. 13.

Monterey faced Evans in a non-district contest Tuesday night.

The Wolves and Lady Wolves travel to Grace Christian on Friday.

Monterey returns home Tuesday with district games against Avoyelles Charter.

The boys fell to Avoyelles Charter 51-33 in their first meeting in Mansura, while the Lady Wolves defeated the Lady Vikings 47-40 the first time the two teams met.
