Ferriday, USDA discuss water system

Installation of new water meters in Ferriday may be closer to reality following a meeting between local officials and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Ferriday Mayor Glen McGlothin and representatives of town's engineering firm, Bryant Hammett & Associates, met with USDA Monday to finalize paperwork for the approval of a third party to operate the new water plant to be built in Ferriday.

"We're a lot closer now," McGlothin said. "There's still a few odds and ends and things we have to tweak, but we hope to get it done soon. If everything goes well, we should have it completed within a month."

The mayor the process has been "frustrating."

"This has been going on for a year-and-a-half," he said.

McGlothin said once USDA gives approval to third party the town will be able to install a new automated meter reading system.

"There are a number of water meters not functioning properly," McGlothin said.
