Local projects pushed in Washington A Concordia Parish delegation wrapped up meetings in Washington D.C. today (Wednesday) after speaking with members of the state's Congressional delegations on a number of issues, including the four-laning of Hwy. 84.
"We had some good meetings," said Heather Malone, Director of the Concordia Economic Development District.
Concordia's delegation included Malone, Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland. Ferriday Mayor Glen McGlothin, Vidalia City Manager Ken Walker, H.L. Irvin, Sherry Rabb, Vidalia alderman Tron McCoy, Bob Buseck, Bobby Paul and Mindy Ratcliffe.
Discussions with lawmakers centered on Hwy. 84/El Camino Real, a port in Vidalia, a Ferriday project and Broadband Initiative.
One of the main points of focus on the trip was to seek funding for the four-laning of Hwy. 84 through Louisiana. The highway is part of the El Camino East/West Corridor. Part of the 1,729-mile stretch of road -- the El Camino Real -- was a major pathway during the Spanish days more than 200 years ago and known as "The King's Highway."
The four-laning project was originally designed as an economic boost for the states that U.S. Highway 84 passes through. However, hurricane disasters and other funding issues took priority over the El Camino work upgrade. The corridor is largely rural in nature with its mid-point being the Natchez-Vidalia region. For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
