Davis era starts at Vidalia

Kale Davis never envisioned his first head coaching varsity job would be in baseball.

But when Tim Herndon resigned at the end of the last season, Davis, who served as an assistant coach last year, was asked to take the head coaching position.

"I did not want to let these guys down," Davis said. "I learned a lot last year. Coach Herndon worked under Coach (Johnny Lee) Hoffpauir and he has passed on a lot of things he learned. The main thing I wanted to do is get a competent staff and I believe I have that in Brett Hinson, Josh Bennett and Josh Daniel."

The Viking baseball team also lost Caleb Vines, who signed with Louisiana College.

Vines batted .378, leading the team in home runs with 16. He also led the team with 31 runs and 23 stolen bases. He was one of the few returning starters for the Vikings.

But Davis has 11 veteran seniors returning.

"These guys have played together a long time," Davis said

Returning Viking players include senior pitcher Corey Williams, senior infielder Lane Strong, senior first baseman Devin Barnes and senior pitcher/infielder Jamale Davis.

Strong finished with a 7.4 earned run average, 3.11 in district. He had a 2-hitter against Bunkie and 3-hitter against Avoyelles Parish.

Strong finished the season with 30 strikeouts.

Williams was 2-3 with a 5.25 ERA, striking out 19.

Davis hit .342 with a home run, scoring 21 runs.

Davis also had a 6.6 earned run average, striking out 21.

Barnes hit a team-leading .409 with five home runs.

Other seniors are Levi Brown, Nate Bozeman, Matt Souderes, Dakota Townsend, Avery Parker, Michael Nelson and Sessions Vestal.

Among the juniors are Roper Craft and Garrett Rehms.

Sophomores expected to help on the mound are Josh Foucher, Stewart Mallory and Kyle Coley.

The Vikings missed the playoffs last season, going 6-18.

"We just need to get some confidence early," Davis said. "These guys are ready to make some things happen this year."
