Story Archives: Black River locks operating hours reduced

Black River locks operating hours reduced
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg District, will reduce levels of service at all locks owned by the Corps, including the Jonesville Locks & Dam.

The decision is the result of recommendations made in a study conducted by the Inland Marine Transport System (IMTS).

Corps officials said the changes are anticipated in mid-summer after held public meetings. The reduction in services will be coordinated with all users to determine the operating hours that meet the needs of the greatest number of users.

The lower two locks, Jonesville and Columbia, will conduct lock operations 18 hours a day and the upper two locks, Felsenthal and H.K. Thatcher, will conduct lock operations 16 hours a day. Once the operating hours have been determined, the District will publish the hours through local news outlets and on its websites to maximize public awareness.
