Portraits to be displayed at central office

The Concordia Parish School Board approved the 2012-13 school calendar, honored students of the year and agreed to follow a resolution approved in the past to display the portraits of former superintendents at the board's central office in Vidalia.

Former superintendent James Lee, who served from 1992-1999, told the board during its regular meeting Thursday night that the display of the portraits was approved by a previous board in 1993. Lee said the idea was to honor and recognize the service of the superintendents.

Superintendent's have a stressful job, Lee said, and there were some "tumultuous periods" in the 1990s as with all administrations. He recalled a period of financial distress for the school system in which employees agreed to give back 20 percent of their salary supplements. Teamwork, he said, enabled the system to overcome a $597,000 projected shortfall and end the fiscal year with $44,068 in excess revenue.

Lee said three new positions were created during his tenure, including director of academic affairs, and that despite initial opposition by some, the uniform policy for schools was approved for reasons of economics, self-esteem and safety for students. Payment of 13th checks, classroom supplements for teachers and other programs enacted were step forwards for the school system, he said.

"I know that I could have come and talked to the superintendent about the portraits and it would have been done," he said, "but I wanted to come before the board."

Lee said portraits of superintendents were displayed at the old School Board administrative office in Vidalia, but were never transferred to the new administrative building.

"We spent a great deal of time getting those portraits together," he said. Each person pictured, he said, represents a period of the history of the parish's school system.
