Story Archives: Ferriday waiting to see on playoffs

Ferriday waiting to see on playoffs
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Ferriday High's boys basketball team will now have to wait and see if they will be competing in the postseason after falling to Jonesboro Hodge 88-50 Friday in Jonesboro.

Freddie Gray led the Trojans with 10 points.

The Trojans are ranked No. 31 by kenramsey.com in the Class 2A power rankings, but the final rankings will not be announced until Thursday.

"It would be great to get in," said Ferriday coach James Davis, knowing his first round opponent could be at John Curtis or St. Thomas Aquinas. "Once you get in, anything can happen. Plus it's a good experience for the younger guys."

Jonesboro-Hodge won the district and is ranked No. 8.

"We played in a competitive district," Davis said. "We had our opportunities, but let games with Homer and Lakeside slip away. I'm disappointed, but I am proud of the effort. We didn't have a go-to guy like we have had in the past. Sometimes it takes working harder on your own to get to that next level."

The Lady Trojans finished their season at 4-17 after falling to Jonesboro-Hodge 69-32.

The Lady Tigers led 40-11 at halftime.

Trenia Melancon led Ferriday in scoring with 12 points. Shakeria Kelly added nine points.

This year marked the first year in 15 years Lady Trojan coach Lisa Abron will not have a team in the playoffs.

"It's kind of strange because usually I am getting ready for a tiebreaker game of some type or the playoffs," Abron said. "But we had a young team and only seven players. We'll start back up in the weight room in two weeks and dedicate ourselves to having a better season next year. I should have a larger group coming from the junior high, so we should be much better next season."
