Is Santorum the Right choice?

One of the responsibilities of writing a weekly newspaper column is openly admitting when you're wrong.

Accordingly, it is my pleasure to acknowledge that an observation I made a few weeks ago was way off the mark. The observation in question concerned the race for the Republican nomination for president.

It was just weeks ago, as you will recall, that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney appeared en route to easily securing the GOP nomination, or the man who would earn the right to square off with President Obama in this fall's presidential race. And it was suggested in this space just a few weeks ago that former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was the only Republican who stood in Romney's way.

I misjudged the voter reaction to Gingrich's personal failings, and I didn't put enough stock in the Right's reservations about Romney. And I completely overlooked the possibility that former Sen. Rick Santorum's steady, conservative message would resonate with a Republican electorate that was still in the hunt for a candidate who best represented their views.
