Stricter guidelines in place for college admission From 10 to 20 percent of Concordia Parish's college-bound seniors may be going to a community college after graduation in the future due to stricter admission guidelines being implemented by Louisiana universities.
Those new guidelines -- to be fully in place by 2014 -- will ultimately match present requirements for TOPS (Taylor Opportunity Programs Scholarship), requirements that more and more parish seniors are meeting, according to Dr. Paul Nelson, Director of Academic Affairs for the Concordia Parish School Board.
State universities are putting into a motion a requirement to consider only the core curriculum grade-point average rather than a student's overall GPA (grade point average) or class rank as an admissions barometer.
The core curriculum includes English, math, science and social studies.
LSU will now require a 3.0 GPA in the core classes, the highest in the state. Other universities have a minimum core GPA requirement range of 2.0 to 2.5.
Beginning the upcoming school year, LSU, Louisiana Tech University, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and the University of New Orleans will no longer offer remedial classes. Other four-year colleges will implement the change by 2014.For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
