Bairnsfather signs with LSUA

Ellen Bairnsfather did not need a lot of convincing to sign a softball scholarship at LSU-Alexandria. All it took was one visit.

"It's close, it's a small school and I can make a lot of friends," Bairnsfather said. "They have a very nice facility and I like the coaches."

LSU-Alexandria head coach Charlie Zeilman said Bairnsfather is one of the rare high school seniors he has signed.

"I'm going for a lot of junior college players," said Zeilman, who is in his first year at LSU-A after coaching the high school softball team at Americus High in El Paso, Texas. "Ellen is very athletic, is very coachable, makes good grades and has good character. "She can help us in the outfield, with base running and as a utility player. I can see her earning a starting job down the road."

Bairnsfather has practically played all positions at Monterey. She is looking forward to playing the outfield at LSU-A.

"I love the outfield," she said.

But she admitted she will miss pitching.

"But the good thing about pitching in high school is that it helped my batting," she said.

Bairnsfather, who plans on taking physical therapy, posted an impressive 0.58 earned run average over 98 1/3 innings last year. She struck out 81 and walked 22. The Lady Wolf batted .326 and scored 36 runs.

Bairnsfather, who also played basketball, was part of the first Monterey team last year to make it to the state tournament in Sulphur. The Lady Wolves fell to Grand Lake in the Class B semifinals.

"I'm really going to miss my teammates and coaches," Bairnsfather said. "I have a lot of great memories here."
