Story Archives: Sanders' lawyers seek to suppress statements

Sanders' lawyers seek to suppress statements
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Lawyers for accused killer Thomas Steven Sanders say statements he made to law enforcement personnel following his arrest in the murder of a 12-year-old Las Vegas girl should not be admissible during his trial scheduled to begin January 14, 2013.

Government prosecutors say the statements were given voluntarily and should be admitted.

The two stances were revealed in paperwork filed in federal court in Alexandria last week.

Sanders is accused of murdering Lexis Roberts in Catahoula Parish in 2010.

A number of preliminary matters will be heard in court this year. The trial may last up to five weeks, according to court records.

U.S. District Judge Dee Drell is presiding.

Sanders previously entered a plea of not guilty to federal charges of kidnapping and using a firearm that resulted in the death of Roberts.

Authorities allege that between September 5 and October 8, 2010, Sanders kidnapped Roberts in Arizona and transported her to Louisiana, where he used a firearm to murder her.

Sanders, who had been declared dead in Mississippi in 1994, is also believed responsible for the death of Suellen Roberts, 31, the mother of Lexis Roberts.
