Story Archives: Vidalia moving into municipal complex this week

Vidalia moving into municipal complex this week

The Vidalia Town Council held its final meeting in the old city hall Tuesday night.

"This is the last official meeting at old city hall," said Mayor Hyram Copeland. "It has served us well through the years."

Town offices will be closed Thursday and Friday for the move to the town's new municipal complex located on Hwy. 84.

The complex will house the municipal offices as well as police and fire stations. The new city hall is a 10,000-square feet structure. The new police department building is 8,000 square feet and the new fire department building is 12,000 square feet.

Copeland said the existing fire and police facilities on John Dale Drive will be utilized as substations which he hopes will contribute to a better fire rating for citizens.

Copeland said the municipal facilities as well as the near future completion of the recreation complex have also prompted the town rethink additional highway access.

The current plan has only one way in and one way out from Hwy. 84.

"We have been looking at some issues regarding traffic," said Copeland. "If there was a major wreck at the main intersection, our fire or police vehicles would not be able to get out."

Using money from the road tax fund, the board approved the purchase of adjacent property from the Johnson family for $30,000. An additional dogleg to the left of the current entrance point will go back to Hwy. 84.

Copeland said they are also working working with State Department of Transportation on a possible red light installation at the new intersection.
