Hoffpauir starting off in Syracuse

Jarrett Hoffpauir of Vidalia will start the baseball season in Syracuse with the trilple A team of the Washington Nationals.

Hoffpauir signed a free agent contract with the Nationals last year.

Hoffpauir played in eight games for the Nationals over the past couple of weeks. He had 10 at-bats, collecting one hit, a single up the middle off of St. Louis Cardinal Lance Lynn. He only struck out once and had two walks.

Hoffpauir had 18 total chances in the field, playing third base, shortstop and second base. He had five putouts and one assist.

"I wasn't swinging the bat as well as I could have," Hoffpauir said. "But it was a good experience and I will be playing every day at Syracuse. I had a positive meeting with Coach (Davey Johnson). He is very supportive and told me there were some young guys they wanted to see a little more, but told me they would keep an eye on me. It's part of the business. I knew it could happen, but unfortunately it was a little sooner than I wanted."

The Syracuse Chiefs play a 13-game spring training schedule, beginning March 15 in Kissimmee, Fl.

The Chiefs will take on the Toledo Mud Hens (Detroit Tigers) three times, Oklahoma City RedHawks (Houston Astros) five times, and Gwinnett Braves (Atlanta Braves) five times. Syracuse home games will be played at the Washington complex in Viera, FL.

New manager Tony Beasley's Chiefs team will take the field for the first time in the regular season on April 5 at Alliance Bank Stadium in Syracuse against Rochester.

Hoffpauir started out in the St. Louis organization after standout career with Southern Mississippi, and even played for the Cardinals two years ago.

After a short stint with Toronto, Hoffpauir was picked up by San Diego prior to last season.

After a hot start in the preseason, Hoffpauir strained a quad muscle in his leg and was put on injured reserve.

Hoffpauir went through rehab and was sent down to the Padres' triple-A team in Tucson. He put together a 16-game hitting streak and was hitting above .300 most of the season before finishing at .281.

"I'm confident I can have a good year," Hoffpauir said. "I was hoping to stay away from the cold weather, but that's part of it."
