Caldwell retiring as recreation secretary after 18 years

Lula Mae Caldwell has mixed emotions about stepping down as Recreation District No. 2 secretary after 18 years, and many more as a volunteer assistant.

Caldwell's retirement officially goes into effect on April 30.

"I really wanted to stay with it through the completion of the new recreation complex," Caldwell said. "But I have been thinking about this for about a year."

Caldwell actually began helping voluntarily around 1965. She worked for the Concordia Parish School Board for Superintendent Charles Chauvin, who was secretary of Recreation District No. 2 at the time.

"As time went on, I began to assist him by typing letters, minutes and reports for him," Caldwell said. "I continued to assist him until he retired. During this time I was able to learn all about the workings of Concordia Recreation No. 3. Then, he gave up his position in 1994 and I was hired to replace him."
