Bates reinstated as recreation director An emotional Ferriday Mayor Glen McGlothin reinstated Ferriday recreation director McKinley Bates following a special meeting Monday in Ferriday.
McGlothin sent a letter to board members saying Bates was indefinitely suspended after Bates was charged with felony possession of marijuana with intent, carrying of weapons and possession of CDS during a drug raid on March 5.
Bates was released from the Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office on $45,000 bond March 5.
"I really don't know what to say," Bates said when asked to address the board at the start of the meeting. "My job situation is not about me, but it's about the children. Anyone who takes my place can't produce what I've produced. I've put a lot into it, and have basically put in a lot of my money. I just can't thank the people of Ferriday enough and the board for their support. I know I'm innocent, but I have to prove it now. I'm not a drinker or smoker and do not do drugs."
Bates' son, Demack Bates, was also charged with felony possession of marijuana with intent, carrying of weapons and possession of CDS.
While the decision was McGlothin's, board members Johnnie Brown, Gloria Lloyd and Gail Pryor, along with Recreation District No. 1 president Robert Lee III, and McKinley's aunt, Phyllis Bates Ellis, spoke on his behalf. For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
