Anders says Delta museum vital to region

Rep. Andy Anders of Clayton said he plans to meet with state officials this week in an attempt to stop the possible closure of the Delta Music Museum in Ferriday.

"The museum is a vital to Ferriday and our area," Anders said. "I will be talking to the House appropriations chairman (Jim Fannin) and with the Secretary of State's office on what can be done."

Louisiana Secretary of State Tom Schedler announced last week that his office may have to close the museum and 14 others in the state unless Gov. Bobby Jindal's proposed budget for 2012-13 is revised.

The Ferriday museum's operating hours were cut back last year from Monday through Saturday to Thursday through Saturday to save money.

Mayor Glen McGlothin and museum director Judith Bingham say the cutback has hurt business.

"There are days when tourists drive up to tour the museum and it's closed," McGlothin said. "That's not good for them and it's not good for Ferriday."

Volunteers are assisting in the operations of many museums throughout the state, including Ferriday's.

"We're going to fight to keep the museum open," he said.
