Saunders to talk on Louisiana mound builders
The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians will present an illustrated talk by Joe W. Saunders entitled "The Middle Archaic in Northeast Louisiana" in the museum auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 5.
Admission is free and seating is limited.
Saunders recently retired from his position as Regional Archaeologist, Department of Geosciences, University of Louisiana at Monroe, where he worked for more than 20 years. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. in anthropology from Southern Methodist University and he has extensive archaeological field experience in Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas.
He is past president of the Louisiana Archaeological Society and his publications include numerous journal articles and book chapters. In 1997, he was the senior author of an article published by the prestigious journal "Science" about the Watson Brake mounds near Monroe. More recently, he led the fieldwork to develop the "Driving Trail Guide: Indian Mounds of Northeast Louisiana for the Louisiana Division of Archaeology".
The archaeological period known as the "Middle Archaic" spans the era from 6000 to 3000 B.C. Toward the end of this period, American Indians in northeast Louisiana constructed some of the earliest mounds in North America. Archaeological investigations of these ancient earthworks by Saunders and others have begun to shed light on the lives of these prehistoric Americans.
These early mound builders lived thousands of years before the people who constructed the mounds at Poverty Point, Troyville, and the Grand Village.
