Mayor says museum economic necessity for Ferriday

Mayor Glen McGlothin says the Delta Music Museum is an economic necessity for Ferriday, while it is also an important cultural facility that heralds the history of the town and region.

"We have to figure out a way to keep it open and to keep it open five or six days a week," McGlothin said.

Louisiana Secretary of State Tom Schedler announced two weeks ago that his office may have to close the museum and 14 others in the state unless Gov. Bobby Jindal's proposed budget for 2012-13 is revised.

The Ferriday museum's operating hours were cut back last year from Monday through Saturday to Thursday through Friday to save money.

"We don't know exactly what's going to happen with the museums," said Sailor Jackson, Director of Communications for the Secretary of State's office. "Right now, we are forced to follow a plan to help us operate the agency itself."
