Monterey blanks Rapides

Monterey High's softball team blanked its opponent for the sixth time this season, shutting out Rapides 5-0 Thursday to improve to 11-8 overall and 5-1 in District 4B.

Ellen Bairnsfather allowed four hits and struck out five for the win.

Monterey scored all of its runs in the first three innings – one run in both the top of the first and the top of the second and three runs in the top of the third. All of the Lady Wolves' six hits were singles.

Bairnsfather faced the minimum batters four of the seven innings.

Monterey went 1-2 at the Caldwell Tournament.

The Lady Wolves defeated Runnels 11-2.

Bairnsfather picked up the win, striking out seven, while allowing five hits.

Monterey scored two runs in the first inning as Paige Bryan singled, Karlee Woodruff walked and Bailey New reached on an error.

The Lady Wolves added six runs in the second as Bryan and Baler Smith singled to key the rally.

A three-run fifth inning was keyed by a New single and walks to Kennedy Poole, Bryan and Bairnsfather.

Monterey fell to Mangham 2-0.

Bryan and Poole singled twice, while Bairnsfather singled.

The Lady Wolves lost to Oak Grove 10-1.

Karlee Woodruff doubled and singled, while Bairnsfather, Jody Duncan and Bryan each singled.

On March 23, Monterey scored the only run it needed in the fifth inning as Paige Bryan threw a complete-game shutout and held Avoyelles Charter to three hits in a key 1-0 District 4B win over the Lady Vikings in Monterey.

The win kept Monterey in control of the district as the Lady Wolves are undefeated. The Lady Wolves are ranked No. 9 in Class B power ratings by kenramsey.com.

Bryan never faced more than five batters in one inning, striking out five. Monterey threatened in the fourth inning as Bailey New doubled and Ashlee Willson singled, but were left stranded.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Ellen Bairnsfather walked, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Jody Duncan and stole third base.

Avoyelles Charter tried to throw Bairnsfather out at third, but an errant throw allowed her to score.

Karlee Woodruff followed with a single, but was left stranded.

Monterey hosts Grace Christian Thursday in a make-up game.

Grace Christian is currently rated No. 6 in the Class B rankings.
