Story Archives: Spring game against another foe?

Spring game against another foe?
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Interesting idea for future spring football games.

But I'm not holding my breath. I just can't see the NCAA going along with this one. Unless they get a big cut out of the gate.

Clemson's Dabo Swinney has brought up the idea of the NCAA permitting a spring scrimmage against another team.

I'm sure others have come up with the idea, but Swinney is taking it by the horns.

Dabo proposes that college football teams have the option of a spring game against themselves or another team. If you play another team, it must be both an out-of-conference team but also one within a reasonable driving distance. The coaches will agree upon the rules of the scrimmage in advance.

First of all, I can hear the detractors now -- what if someone gets a serious injury? Where do you play the game? What about the guys who will not see any action that may have had extensive playing time in an intrasquad game?

But I think the positives outweigh the negatives.

Swinney proposes playing a team out of your conference not far away.

LSU versus Tulane or TCU? Ole Miss or Mississippi State against Southern MIss?

Ole Miss or Mississippi State against Louisiana Tech?

As for injuries, they can happen in a regular spring game. Deciding on a venue, have a home and home series for two years. Or allow the visiting team a proper share of the gate.

Playing time? Add a fifth quarter with reserves.

College basketball and baseball may not be too happy about it. Then again, think how much more inviting that Super Weekend would be with a football game against another team.

But the interest is the biggest plus.

I don't care to watch Georgia against Georgia, Alabama against Alabama or Southern Cal against Southern Cal.

But give me Georgia against Clemson, Texas A&M against Texas (that one can be on pay-for-view), Georgia Teach against Alabama Oklahoma versus Nebraska or Auburn against Florida State and I am tuning in.

Besides, those guys are tired of beating up on each other for a month or so. And you can build some great camaraderie early with the new starters.

Plus, it would give pollsters a better idea of who should be ranked where in August.

The positives seem to outweigh the negatives in Dabo's idea. That's why I'm not getting my hopes up.
