Anders optimistic on Delta Museum

Rep. Andy Anders of Clayton said Secretary of State Tom Schedler is considering privatizing security in state museums to save enough money to keep some of the facilities open.

"Hopefully, this will help keep the Delta Museum in operation," Anders said.

Anders also said he has introduced a bill that would insure that the boil weevil eradication fund, financed by an assessment on farmers, remains within the Louisiana Department of Agriculture. He said a bill has been filed that will transfer those funds to the Department of Health & Hospitals.

Schedler announced three weeks ago that Ferriday's Delta Music Museum was among 15 statewide that face closure due to cutbacks proposed in Gov. Bobby Jindal's 2012-13 budget.

"The secretary is very interested in keeping the museums open and very optimistic that something can be done," Anders said. "He's got a plan for privatizing security in some of the museums. Delta Museum was number five or six on a list for funding, but now it's up to number three."

Anders said that "82 percent of the Secretary of State's budget goes to the election division as mandated by the constitution. There's very little self-generated funds."
