Story Archives: Vidalia to build apartments

Vidalia to build apartments
by Tracey Bruce - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
City Manager Ken Walker announced Tuesday that the city of Vidalia's housing shortage could be eased before long.

He stated that the city has been actively pursuing a residential developer and that an unnamed developer is interested in purchasing a 65-acre tract of land.

The specific location is off Martin Luther King Drive adjacent to the BASF plant. The transaction would call for the developer to purchase at the current appraisal value.

Walker further explained that the developer's total proposal calls for six acres of apartment living comprised of nine three-story buildings with seven apartments per floor. The complex would offer one, two and three-bedroom units.

The first phase will be one building consisting of 21 units and that further development would depend on the success of the initial complex.

Additional phases of construction plan for 1.26 acres of town homes, five acres for a senior living center with 100 beds, and 30 acres for single family living homes ranging from $125,000 to $199,000. The remaining 20.74 acres will include roads, upgraded drainage, a two-acre pond, a picnic park and landscaping.

The developer states "the total project is envisioned to provide attractive, livable environment for a wide variety of family units with a wide variety of residential choices."

"We have to clear all the hurdles before construction," said Walker asking that the board authorize the initial step of the process to sell the land.

The measure was approved unanimously.
